ABBA Returns with First New Album in 40 Years: A New Chapter Begins

After nearly four decades of silence, one of the most iconic pop groups in history is back. Swedish supergroup ABBA has officially returned with brand new music, thrilling generations of fans around the globe. Their long-awaited reunion brings not only new songs, but also a full studio album — a project that many believed would never happen.

Titled “Voyage,” the new album marks the band’s first release since 1981’s The Visitors. On September 2nd, 2021, ABBA surprised the world by unveiling two brand new singles, “I Still Have Faith in You” and “Don’t Shut Me Down,” alongside the announcement of the full album and an innovative live concert experience.

In an emotional livestream event watched by millions, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad came together (virtually) to share what this new project means to them. “It’s been a long time coming,” said Benny, “but we never really said goodbye. We just took a break — and now, it’s time.”

The songs themselves are classic ABBA: filled with heart, layered harmonies, and that unmistakable blend of melancholy and joy. “I Still Have Faith in You” is a sweeping ballad of reconciliation and enduring friendship, while “Don’t Shut Me Down” delivers a dancefloor-ready burst of energy, showing that ABBA hasn’t lost its spark.

Fans were quick to respond, sending both songs skyrocketing up streaming charts within hours. Social media exploded with tributes, reaction videos, and emotional posts from longtime listeners who had waited their entire adult lives for new ABBA music.

But the surprises didn’t stop there.

In addition to the album, ABBA also announced an ambitious new concert series set in London — unlike anything seen before. Rather than performing live, the group will appear as digital avatars (or “ABBAtars”) created using groundbreaking motion-capture technology. Set in a custom-built arena, the show promises a full-scale experience with a live band, lights, and the magic of 1979-era ABBA brought back to life.

“It’s not nostalgia,” Björn explained. “It’s something completely new — but built on everything we’ve been.”

The announcement of Voyage sent waves through the music industry, prompting reflection on ABBA’s cultural legacy. From Eurovision champions to global icons, the group’s music has transcended time and genre. Their influence is still felt today in pop, dance, film, and fashion — with hits like “Dancing Queen,” “Mamma Mia,” and “The Winner Takes It All” continuing to captivate new audiences.

With the release of new music and the promise of a revolutionary live experience, ABBA has proven once again that great music never truly fades.

“We may have aged,” Anni-Frid said with a smile, “but our voices, our songs — they still carry the same spirit. This is our way of saying thank you for waiting.”
