ABBA on Their New Album Voyage: ‘We Don’t Need to Prove Anything’

After nearly four decades away from the recording studio, legendary Swedish pop group ABBA stunned the world with their 2021 comeback album, Voyage. For many fans, it was a dream they never thought would come true. But for the band members themselves—Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad—the return was not about chasing charts or fame. It was about something much deeper: reconnecting with each other, and with the music that defined their lives.

In interviews surrounding the release, the group made it clear: Voyage was not about proving they still had it. “We don’t need to prove anything,” Björn Ulvaeus said frankly. “We just wanted to make music together again, for ourselves—and for the fans who have stayed with us for so many years.”

The album features ten new tracks, all recorded with the original lineup. Songs like I Still Have Faith in You and Don’t Shut Me Down capture the emotional depth and melodic brilliance ABBA is known for, but also reflect the passage of time. Their voices carry more maturity, and the lyrics speak of resilience, reflection, and the bonds that endure through decades.

Despite the pressure that comes with being one of the best-selling music acts in history, the members of ABBA approached Voyage without the weight of expectations. Benny Andersson explained that the process was surprisingly natural: “When we started recording again, it felt like no time had passed. It was joyful—not about reliving the past, but continuing a conversation we paused 40 years ago.”

Critics and fans alike praised Voyage for its authenticity. It wasn’t trying to mimic current pop trends or recapture old glories—it stood on its own as a mature, heartfelt album. For ABBA, that was enough. “We know who we are,” said Anni-Frid Lyngstad. “We’re not chasing youth or relevance. We’re just happy we could give something back.”

Voyage isn’t just a return—it’s a statement. ABBA didn’t need to come back. But they did, on their own terms, with grace, warmth, and timeless music. And in doing so, they reminded the world why their legacy has never faded.
