Introduction
Country music legend Trace Adkins is trading his cowboy hat for a script — but he’s still staying true to his roots. In an exclusive interview with Siouxland News, Adkins opened up about his role in FOX’s country drama Monarch, offering fans a behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of television’s most talked-about series.
Set in the high-stakes world of country music royalty, Monarch tells the story of the Roman family, a powerful dynasty built on talent, secrets, and ambition. Adkins stars as Albie Roman, the patriarch of the family — a rugged, deeply traditional country music icon whose fame is rivaled only by the family’s complicated legacy.
“It’s not a stretch for me to play a country singer,” Adkins joked with a grin. “But Albie’s not just a musician. He’s a husband, a father, a man with a lot of history — some of it dark. That’s what makes the role interesting.”
Adkins, who has been a fixture in the country music scene for over two decades, said that taking on a leading role in a primetime TV drama was both exciting and intimidating. “I’ve done acting here and there,” he said, referring to his past appearances in films and guest roles on TV shows. “But Monarch is different. It’s deep. It’s emotional. There’s a real story here, and the music is just one piece of it.”
Starring alongside award-winning actress Susan Sarandon, who plays Albie’s wife Dottie Roman, Adkins said he was humbled to work with such a seasoned cast. “Susan is incredible. Watching her work — the intensity, the preparation — it pushes you to bring your A-game. I’ve learned a lot.”
In addition to acting, Adkins also contributes original music to the show’s soundtrack. “That’s the fun part,” he said. “The music in Monarch isn’t just background noise — it’s part of the storytelling. Every song tells you something about the characters and their journey.”
Monarch blends family drama, music industry intrigue, and a touch of scandal — a combination that Adkins believes will keep viewers hooked. “It’s not sugar-coated,” he explained. “You see the glamour of fame, but also the price that comes with it. These characters are real people with real problems.”
Despite his busy filming schedule, Adkins hasn’t stepped away from music entirely. He continues to tour, record, and connect with fans across the country. “Music will always be who I am,” he said. “But I’m enjoying this new chapter. It’s a challenge, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
As Monarch continues to gain momentum, Adkins says he’s proud to represent both country music and the heart of family drama on screen. “At the end of the day, it’s about telling a good story — whether through a song or a scene,” he said. “And Monarch has one heck of a story to tell.”
