ABBA Reflect on ‘Voyage’ Album: “We’re Not Here to Prove Anything”

After nearly four decades away from the recording studio, legendary Swedish pop group ABBA returned to the spotlight with their highly anticipated album, Voyage—a release that sparked excitement across the globe. But for the group, the reunion wasn’t about chart-topping hits or reclaiming fame. It was about reconnecting with their shared history and giving fans a heartfelt final chapter.

“We didn’t come back to prove anything,” said Benny Andersson during a press interview. “We’ve already done that. This is about joy, about creativity—and, honestly, about doing something together again while we still can.”

Released in 2021, Voyage marked ABBA’s first album of new material since The Visitors in 1981. The album features ten original tracks, blending the group’s signature harmonies and melodies with a maturity that reflects the passage of time. Songs like “I Still Have Faith in You” and “Don’t Shut Me Down” showcase both emotional depth and musical craftsmanship, reminding listeners why ABBA remains one of the most beloved pop acts of all time.

Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, who once described themselves as unlikely to reunite, spoke candidly about their decision to record again. “It felt natural,” Agnetha shared. “We didn’t feel pressure. The songs came, the voices were still there, and the connection between us hadn’t disappeared.”

Frida added, “This was never about reliving the past. It’s about honoring it—and giving it a proper goodbye.”

The making of Voyage took place in a relaxed and intimate setting in Stockholm, where the four original members—Björn Ulvaeus, Benny, Agnetha, and Frida—reunited after years of working on separate projects. Björn reflected, “There was no tension. It was as if time had folded. We laughed, we worked, and we remembered what made ABBA, ABBA.”

Though they were aware of the massive expectations surrounding their comeback, the group made it clear they weren’t chasing trends or trying to reinvent themselves for a younger audience. Instead, they leaned into their strengths—emotional storytelling, orchestral arrangements, and timeless pop hooks.

Critics and fans alike praised Voyage for its sincerity and craftsmanship. The album debuted in the top five across multiple countries and rekindled affection for the group’s legacy without attempting to rewrite it. Many listeners described the album as “nostalgic but fresh,” capturing the bittersweet beauty of looking back while embracing the present.

When asked whether Voyage signals a new beginning or a final bow, Benny smiled and said, “Let’s just say we’ve said what we wanted to say. If this is the end, we’re proud of it.”

Frida agreed, adding, “It’s a gift to ourselves, and to our fans—one we didn’t think we’d ever give.”

For ABBA, Voyage isn’t about reliving glory days. It’s about finishing the story on their own terms—with grace, honesty, and a melody that still lingers long after the music fades
