Phil Collins, 74, reveals health update after retiring: 'Very sick'

Phil Collins Health Update: What Really Happened With Him?

Phil Collins, one of the most beloved figures in the world of music, has recently provided a rare and emotional update on his ongoing health struggles, leaving fans around the globe deeply moved. At 74 years old, the legendary drummer, singer, and songwriter has opened up about the physical challenges that have significantly impacted his life and forced him to step away from music.

Collins’ health issues trace back to a spinal injury he suffered in 2007. The damage, which affected vertebrae in his neck, led to serious nerve problems—particularly in his hands and feet. Over time, his condition worsened, and despite undergoing major surgery in 2015, he has since developed a condition known as “drop foot,” which makes walking extremely difficult. He now relies on a cane for mobility and is often seen being assisted in public appearances.

In a recent interview, Collins spoke candidly about the emotional toll of no longer being able to play the drums—an instrument that had been part of his identity for over five decades. “I can barely hold a drumstick now,” he said, his voice laced with emotion. “The physical part of me that made me who I was on stage is simply gone. It’s hard to accept.”

Even more heartbreaking for fans was Collins’ admission that he no longer feels the same desire to create music. In a February 2025 interview, he confessed, “I think about going down to the studio, but I’m just not hungry for it anymore. I’ve been sick—very sick. My body tells me it’s time to rest.”

Collins’ final public performances took place during Genesis’s farewell tour, which concluded in March 2022. During the tour, he performed while seated, with his son Nic Collins taking over drumming duties. The emotional final show at London’s O2 Arena marked the end of an era for Genesis and for Phil as a live performer. Bandmate Mike Rutherford later confirmed that Phil’s physical condition had greatly declined, stating, “He’s much more immobile now, but he’s at peace with it.”

Despite his health challenges, Collins continues to be surrounded by family, including his children and close friends. He spends his days in relative quiet, away from the demanding life of touring and performing. While he has not officially declared retirement, it is clear that his focus is now on rest, reflection, and spending time with loved ones.

Fans continue to express their support and gratitude for Collins’ decades of music—from Genesis classics to solo hits like In the Air Tonight, Against All Odds, and You’ll Be in My Heart. His work has left an indelible mark on generations of listeners, and his courage in the face of serious illness only deepens the respect he commands.

As he steps away from the spotlight, Phil Collins remains a symbol of resilience and artistic brilliance. Though his voice and hands may have quieted, his music will continue to speak for him for generations to come.
